Day 02 :( Jerusalem) Tours to Ein Karem & Bethlehem
After breakfast at hotel ( normally start from 0700 am to 0900 am ) , our catholic expert guide will meet you at Lobby to pick up and start the day tours to Ein Karem; you will visit the Church of Visitation and the birthplace of St. John the Baptist , continue to Bethlehem. First visit to Nativity Church. Then visit Shepherds Field. In the Milk Grotto under the central altar we will walk by the Holy Manger, and the Silver Star. Time for your own prayers, transfer back to your hotel - over night in Jerusalem

Description: Bethlehem is the childhood home of the biblical King David. It is also the birthplace of Jesus Christ and has been a major site of Christian pilgrimage since the construction of the Church of the Nativity in the 4th century AD. The town has been a monastic center for almost as long. In the 5th century AD, St. Jerome built a monastery here and with the aid of local rabbis translated the Old Testament into Latin from the original Hebrew for the Vulgate, the standard Latin translation of the Bible used by the Roman Catholic Church. Bethlehem flourished until Crusader times, but the following centuries witnessed a great reduction in population, reversed only after the 1948 war with the arrival of thousands of Palestinian refugees.
Since 1995, Bethlehem has been under the control of the Palestinian National Authority, which has initiated a program of economic recovery and tourism. Despite the huge number of pilgrims and chaotic urban growth, Bethlehem retains an authentic atmosphere, especially in the central area around Manger Square and in the souk just to the west. The souvenir shops are filled with kitsch religious objects but also carved olive-wood crib scenes that local craftsmen have produced for centuries. No visitor should miss the ancient Church of the Nativity on Manger Square, and the town's other main sights also deserve a visit.

History: it named in honor of Caesar Augustus. Caesarea, the Roman capital of Palestine, is an 8,000 acre site which is located 23 miles south of Mount Carmel on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Caesarea became the administrative capital of the Province of Judea, where the Roman procurators, or governors, resided. Three Roman governors of Palestine lived there: Felix (Acts 24), Festus (Acts 25), and Pontius Pilate (John 19). Archeologists found Pilate’s name carved in stone in the theater at Caesarea. In New Testament times, Caesarea served as the major seaport of Judea. Herod built a harbor that could shelter ships from Mediterranean storms. Herod wanted the city to be Hellenistic, accommodating mainly non-Jewish populations; however, there were still a significant amount of Jews who resided in the city. Cornelius, a Roman officer, was converted to Christianity in Caesarea (Acts 10:1, 24). Peter mission to Caesarea helped to expand the Christian population among the Gentiles (Acts 10).The apostle Peter visited Philip, who was a prominent Christian leader who lived there (Acts 21:8). Caesarea was also the place of Paul’s imprisonment for two years, before his journey to Rome. In AD 70 Roman general Titus returned to Caesarea after conquering Jerusalem, as did Flavius Silva in AD 73 after defeating the fortress cities of Masada and Herodium. During the Byzantine period, Caesarea became a center of Christian learning.

Location: Located on the southern slopes of Mount Hermon near the ancient city of Dan, this city is found at the northern extremity of Palestine. It lies in the Wadi Banias, a beautiful area near the Jordan River.
History: It was called Panion in the second century BC, because the Greek god Pan was worshiped in a cave nearby. It was also the place where the King Antiochus III, of Syria, defeated the Ptolemies of Egypt in a crucial battle in 200 BC. “Panium” was governed by Zenodorus, according to Jewish historian Josephus (Antiquities 15.10.3
Augustus Caesar gave the city to Herod the Great after the death of Zenodorus. King Herod then gave the territory to his third son, Philip, when he died in 4 BC. Philip built his capital and named it Caesarea Philippi, after the Roman emperor Tiberius Caesar and himself. This distinguished it from the larger Caesarea Maritima on the Mediterranean coast. This territory was also known as Panias, an area sacred to the Graeco-Roman nature god. Herod and Philip also built a temple in this capital dedicated to Caesar.
Caesarea Philippi is where Jesus asked His disciples “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” and Peter made his confession that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God (Matt.16:13-16). The transfiguration of Jesus probably took place here as well. King Agrippa II enlarged Caesarea Philippi in about AD 50 and named it Neronias in honor of the emperor Nero. The modern name, Banias, derives from the Arabic difficulty in pronouncing Paneas.

History: Jesus performed His first miracles in Cana. He changed the water into wine (John 2:1, 11) and healed an official son who lived in Capernaum (John 4:46-50). Nathaneal, one of Jesus disciples, and possibly Simon came from Cana (John 21:2).
Cana was made headquarters for defending Galilee against he Romans during the first Jewish revolt, which resulted in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. After this destruction, the town became the seat of the priestly family of Eliashib. John Gospel refers to it as Cana of Galilee,in order to distinguish it from Kanah, located near Tyre (Joshua 19:28). Since Byzantine and medieval times, the traditional site of Cana has been Kefar Kana, about four miles east of Nazareth on the main road from Nazareth to Tiberias. However, contemporary scholars have almost unanimously settled on Khirbet Kana as the site of New Testament Cana. This site is located eight miles north of Nazareth on the northern edge of the Battuf Plain. To this day it is called Cana of Galilee by the Arabs of the region. Pottery from the Hebrew monarchy period, as well as from Hellenistic, Roman, Arabic, and Crusader times, has been found by archeologists.

Although the intricately decorated façade appears to be made of marble, it is actually of sculpted white sandstone.
Above the entrance a circular blue mosaic depicts Mary Magdalene robed in white.
Seven gilded onion domes, each topped by a tall Russian Orthodox cross, make the Church of St Mary Magdalene one of Jerusalem’s most picturesque sights.
It makes an especially striking spectacle at night, when its floodlit domes seem to be floating above the dark trees that surround it.

Built: The Church of St. John the Baptist was founded in the 5th century, probably around 450-60 under the empress Eudokia, It is possible the church was built due to the presence here of the relics of John the Baptist, which were sent to various cities in the 4th century including Jerusalem.
History: The Greek Church of St. John the Baptist in Jerusalem's Christian Quarter (not to be confused with the Franciscan church on the Mount of Olives) can be easily spotted due to its distinctive silvery dome.
Although not regularly open to visitors, this church is worth seeking out, for it is the oldest church in Jerusalem and is the original "Hospital of St John" for which the Knights Hospitallers were named. A tradition that this is the site of the house of Zebedee, father of the apostles James and John, is first mentioned in the 14th century by the pilgrim Nicolas of Poggibonsi. The identification likely arose from a confusion between John the Evangelist and John the Baptist.
The church was restored by the Patriarch of Alexandria after its destruction by the Persians in 614. The church was extensively rebuilt over the original foundations in the 11th century. Aside from the modern facade with its two small bell towers, the Church of St. John the Baptist has remained mostly unchanged for almost 1,000 years.
The present church was built by the merchants of Amalfi and became the headquarters of the Knights Hospitallers. In 1099, many Christian knights who were wounded during the seige of Jerusalem were cared for in this church. After their recovery, some of the grateful knights dedicated themselves to helping the sick and protecting pilgrims to the Holy Land. Calling themselves the Knights of the Hospital of St. John, they later developed into the military order of the Hospitallers, who played a key role in the defense of the Holy Land.
The crypt of the church was apparently filled with debris and abandoned in 1187, after which only the upper church (the present church) was in use, probably by Greek Orthodox priests. The church seems to have become a mosque in the 16th century, but was soon returned to Greek ownership. In 1660, a large hospice for pilgrims was built adjacent to the church.
In the 19th century, the crypt was cleared out and a splendid reliquary was discovered in the masonry of the altar (it is now in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate Museum). Excavations also uncovered various architectural fragments from the Byzantine and Crusader eras.

Location: El aqsa mosque is located on the southern edge of the Temple mount. It is accessed from the temple mount for Muslims or through the nearby Mugrabi gate for other faiths during regulated hours between the prayers.
Built: The earliest mosque that was certainly built here was constructed by the Umayyad around 710 AD, only a few decades after the Dome of the Rock. Under Abbasid rule, it reached its greatest extent by the end of the 8th century with 15 aisles.
History: Al-Aqsa ("the farthest") Mosque is the 3rd holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. It is the central focus of the Muslim community in Jerusalem, hosting daily prayers and accommodating large crowds for Friday sermons. he area of the al-Aqsa mosque was part of the great second temple which was built in 20BC by Herod the Great, King of Israel under the Romans (37BC - 4BC). After the Romans crushed the great revolt (70AD), the temple was leveled and was in ruins until the end of the Byzantine period.
The Arabs conquered Jerusalem in 638AD, and Khalif Omar visited and prayed in the site in that year. The dome of the Rock shrine, with the large golden dome and an octagon structure, was built by the Umayyad Khalif Abdul-Malik ibn Marwan in 691 (72 year according to Muslim calendar), and named it after Omar. It is one of the most beautiful and enduring shrines in the World, and remained almost untouched throughout the years. The rock is, according to Muslim tradition, the spot where prophet Mohamed ascended to heaven.
Years later, either in 696 (by the same Khalif) or in 705AD (by his son), another dome was built on the far south side: the Al-Aqsa mosque (also "Al-Aksa", which means "the remote" mosque). It was named after the tradition of prophet Muhammad's imaginative night travel from Mecca to a remote mosque (Qur'an Night Journey 17 1): "Glory be to Him Who made His servant to go on a night from the Sacred Mosque to the remote mosque of which We have blessed the precincts, so that We may show to him some of Our signs; surely He is the Hearing, the Seeing".
After the mosque was destroyed in the great earthquake of 749, it was repaired by 780. Following another devastating earthquake (1033) it was rebuilt (1035), which is the present day structure.
In 1099 the Crusaders called the Temple mount as "Templum Domini", turned the Dome of the rock to a church, adding a cross on the dome. They turned the Al-Aqsa mosque to a prayer house and then to Baldwin's royal palace in 1104, naming it King Solomon's palace.
The Templar Knights military-religious organization was established in 1118, and named their organization after the temple. The vast halls under Al-Aqsa mosque was believed to be King Solomon's stables, a name still used today in the area that the was cleared under the mosque.
The Crusaders were driven out from Jerusalem by Saladin in 1187.
The Dome of the Rock shrine and the al-Aqsa mosque remain active until today. In 1967 Israel reunited Jerusalem, but left the control of the temple mount to the Muslim Wakf. From time to time there are religious and political frictions ignited at the site, for example the riots in year 2000 that sparked the 5-years Palestinian uprising, called the "Al-Aqsa Intefada". The situation seems explosive almost periodically, and the Israeli police staffs thousands of policemen in some Fridays, limiting the age and residence of the allowed persons to enter the temple mount in order to reduce the friction. There are some extreme Jewish groups who want to rebuild the "third temple", but this is a small group which is limited by the authorities. In addition, there are political debates over the fate of the city, which spells out more trouble in this hot spot.
Description: The Al-Aqsa Mosque occupies the south side of the Haram (Temple Mount) and is oriented north to south. The entrance and main facade is on the north side, directly facing the Dome of the Rock, and the dome is at the south end over the mihrab.
Built by the Templars, the three central bays of the facade are Romanesque in style, with the zigzag decoration and blind arches seen more commonly in 11th- and 12th-century European churches. The outer arches added by the Mamelukes in the 14th century follow the same general design. Entrance is through the central arch.
The interior of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with seven aisles, dates mostly from the 20th century. The nave and east side of the mosque were rebuilt as part of a major restoration in 1938-42, during which the Carrara marble columns were donated by Mussolini of all people, and the colorful painted ceiling was funded by King Farouk of Egypt.
Some older elements do survive, however, including the mihrab at the south end, decorated in 1187 by Saladin, and the mosaics above the central aisle arch and in the dome, dating from 1035. Just east of the mihrab is a Crusader chapel known as the Mihrab of Zacharia, with a lovely rose window. Another Crusader chapel on the west side is used for women's prayer.
Even older elements are hidden underneath the mosque, in an area not normally open to visitors. Just to the left of the main entrance to Al-Aqsa, a flight of 16 steps leads down to an area called al-Aqsa Qadima (Ancient Al-Aqsa), where an ancient ramp connects the Temple Mount with the walled-up Double Gate.
Just inside the Double Gate is a vestibule containing columns from Herod's original south entrance to Temple Mount. The columns support two pairs of domes, which date from a reconstruction in the 7th century. More columns were added later to provide support to the platform above; these probably date from construction on Al-Aqsa Mosque in the 8th century.

History: The Holy Sepulcher or the Sacred Tomb, in Arabic called Al-Qeyamah, which means the Resurrection. It is no doubt the most important shrine in the Christian world. On the grounds of the Holy Sepulcher it is believed that Jesus Christ (pbuh) was crucified, buried and rose from the dead.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the most Holy sites in the Christian world, the site of the burial place of Jesus. The 12th C structure is located on the traditional site of Golgotha, the crucifixion and burial site of Jesus.
The large basilica was leveled by the Persian intrusion (614AD). The new church was built on top of it, so few remains of the foundation are left. However, this basilica is illustrated in the Byzantine mosaic map of Madaba, which was discovered in 1884 in a Byzantine church in Madaba, Jordan. This ancient map, laid out in the 6th C AD, shows the map of the Holy Land, with dozens of illustrated sites, including Jerusalem and the original basilica that once stood there. It has three doors on the front, parts of one of them survived in the current structure.
After the conquest of Jerusalem by the Arabs (638AD) the basilica was partially restored on a smaller scale. It was initially honored by the new rulers, who respected Jesus and his burial place. However, it was again leveled in 1010AD by the Arab rulers when their faith became more extreme. This destruction may have sparked the Crusaders waves of conquest, which aimed at regaining the control of the Holy city and rebuilding the church.
In 1099AD the Crusaders take the city and hold it until 1187. They restored the basilica and inaugurated it in 1149AD as St. Sepulchre. After the surrender and fall of the city to the Saladin army, the Arabs honored the church, and the key to the church was kept by Arab families - until this date.
The third Crusaders campaign (1189-1192) attempted to recapture the Holy city and regain control of the church, but failed. However, a treaty between Richard and Saladin (1192-1195) allowed pilgrims to visit the church. Five more Crusades (1204-1270) also failed to regain the city.
In July 1927 the church suffered damages in the 6.3 magnitude earthquake .
The church is controlled by different Christian denominations within the church, each having a part of it: Catholics, Armenian, Greek Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Coptic and Ethiopian. The Muslim families have the key to the main door since 1187, and used to sit in the entrance, manage the church, and mediate between the different denominations. It is opened to the public and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors year round.

It is truly inspiring to visit the gates of Jerusalem, especially the Jerusalem gate of Jaffa where much history happened. It is such a nice part of an Israel travel plan!

6-Dung Gate (Sha'ar Ha'ashpot): No one really knows why this gate was named the Jerusalem Dung Gate. Some believe that the whole old city's trash was cleared out of this gate.
7-Zion Gate (Sha'ar Zion):
This gate is where you access Mt. Zion. It is known also by the name of the gate of the prophet David, since David's tomb is thought to be located on mount Zion. The gate has some battle marks left from the war of independence in 1948.
8-Jaffa Gate Jerusalem (Sha'ar Yaffo):
The most famous Jerusalem gate, where many people enter the old city's quarters and the Tower of David. This gate was named Jaffa because the road leading from it goes to the port of Jaffa.
9. Hulda Gates (Sha'arei Chulda): These gates, which are sealed, were discovered during excavations that revealed structures from the time of the second temple of Jerusalem. They are located in the south-east side of the Temple Mount, and include ancient stairs leading to the temple.

History:The burial caves were cut into the rock in the 1st C AD. They were later expanded into a cross-shaped church with the tomb in its center. In the 6th C Ad an octagon shaped church was built on the upper level, covering the tomb. It was destroyed in the Persian invasion (614).
During the Crusaders period a large church was built on the upper level, and a monastery was also added - the Abbey of St. Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, which was protected by a wall. The staircase and entrance were also part of the Crusaders church. It was destroyed by Saladin (1187) and all what was left was the south entrance and staircase.
The lower church was subjected to flooding, since it is adjacent to the Kidron brook. After the floods of 1972 the area was cleaned, and at that time there were archaeological excavations conducted here to determine the age of the complex.

Jesus grew up in Nazareth, It is first mentioned in the New Testament as the home of Mary and Joseph, It was located in the rocky limestone hills, overlooking the Jezreel Valley. It is situated on three sides of a hill. This location forms a sheltered valley with a moderate climate favorable to fruits and wildflowers. Archeologists found that the ancient town was higher on the western hill than the present village, although trade routes and roads passed near Nazareth; the village itself was not on any main road. Nazareth is not mentioned in the Old Testament, Jewish writings, or the histories of Josephus. Nathanael remarked, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth, Jesus’ public ministry began in Nazareth. He later left the village to be baptized by John in the Jordan River; Nazareth remained a Jewish city until the time of the emperor Constantine (AD 327), when it became a sacred place for Christian pilgrims. History: The Western wall is a remnant of Herod's grand temple, and is the holiest site for Jews. It attracts thousands of Jewish worshippers daily, who come to pray and lay out their problems and seek for heavenly guidance. They feel the presence of God's spirit, who according to their belief resides for thousands of years in the holy temple.
Herod the Great, King of Israel under the Romans (37BC - 4BC), enlarged and rebuilt the second temple, and made it a magnificent temple. A reconstruction of the temple is seen on the illustration on the right, with an indication of the western wall.
After the total destruction of the temple in 70 AD, following the Jewish revolt against the Romans, only a few layers of the grand temple were left, and the Jews were not allowed to rebuild their temple.
The worship at the site of the western wall started after the destruction, and was referred in early texts in the 3rd-5th C. For 2,000 years the Jews came to the site and prayed for the rebuilt of Jerusalem and the Jewish Nation, since the fate of both coincided at the same time. For many times during the history the Jews were forbidden to approach the site, or were harassed while doing so, or had to bribe to get into the site.
In 1967, after the 6 day war, the prayers and tears of 2,000 years were answered: the holy site returned back again to Jewish control, and was opened to the public. The area before the western wall was razed down to allow the multitude of worshippers to assemble in the site.
Along the outer Northern Western wall, a tunnel of 300M was dug (1987-1996) along an ancient aqueduct and revealed the hidden Herodian Wall. It starts from the Western Wall and reaches Via Dolorosa. Location: Via Dolorosa is located within the old city of Jerusalem. It starts from the place where he was tried and convicted - near the Lions' gate on the eastern side (Muslim quarter). It ends in the crucifixion place, Golgotha, where the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is located in the west side of the old city (Christian quarter).
Description:("Way of Grief" in Latin) is a road in the old city of Jerusalem, a path where Jesus was lead in agony, carrying the crucifixion cross. There are a total of 14 stations along this path, based on events that occurred on the way to the Golgotha hill, the site of crucifixion, which is located at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Eight stations are marked along the old city road, while 6 additional stations are places in the compound of the church.
Station 1: Jesus is condemned to death
It is located on the north-west corner of the temple mount, across the street from the Franciscan convent of the Flagellation (station 2). This is the present position of the Al-Omariya school, as seen in the photo below with the round sign "I" (which is "1" in Roman numerals). The site was in the Roman times the place of the seat of Pontius Pilate, located in the Antonia fortress, and the place of the hall of judgment. John 18-28: "Then led them Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment". Jesus is condemned to death by Pontius Pilate, as per John 19:16: "Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified".
Station 2: Jesus receives His Cross
The second station is located near the compound of the Franciscan monastery, across the street from the first station. It is seen below, behind the sign with the station number "II". At this station Jesus receives the cross (John 19:17, 19): "And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha...And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross...".
Station 3: Jesus falls the first time under His Cross
This station is located on the corner of Via Dolorosa and El Wad (Hagai) street, which is seen in the photo below. At this point Via Dolorosa makes a sharp turn to the south-east, following the direction of the western side of the temple mount, until it turns again westwards at the fifth station.
Station 4: Jesus meets Mary His Mother
This 4th station is located very close to station 3, further south on El-Wad (Hagai) street. Here, Jesus met his mother Mary according to the tradition. An Armenian church ("Armenian Church of Our Lady of the Spasm") is located behind the walls of this site. As per John 19, 26: "When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!"
Station 5: Simon helps Jesus to carry His Cross
The 5th station is located at the corner of Via Dolorosa road and El-Wad ("The Gai") road. At this corner the road turns sharply to the right, and then starts climbing up the hill with a series of stairs. A small Franciscan church is located at this station, dedicated to Simon the Cyrenian, who assisted Jesus with the cross. This is based on Luke 23, 26: "And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus". Note that Cyrenia is located in modern Lybia.
Station 6: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
Station 6 is further west up the hill, and is dedicated to the woman (St. Veronica) who wiped Jesus face. This is based on Luke 23, 27: "And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him". Her name, Veronica, may have been based on the Latin words "Vera"+"Icon", or "true image" - the face of Jesus on the woman's handkerchief.
Station 7: Jesus falls the second time
The 7th station, according to the tradition, marks the place where Jesus passed through the Gate of Judgment, along the streets of Jerusalem. This street in one of the busiest in the old city, as it may have been during Jesus times. It was an intersection of the Cardo Maximus and a transverse street of the Roman Aelia-Capitolina, and in modern days an intersection of Via Dolorosa with Khan es-Zeit (the Oil Market). The way up hill and the pressure of the city had its toll: Jesus falls here for the second time under the weight of the cross.
Station 8: Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem
Station 8 is located closest to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and is dedicated by the Greek Orthodox to Saint Charalampos; their monastery is located behind the wall. The station is based on Luke 23, 27: "But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children".
Station 9: Jesus falls the third time
Further up the hill and close to the place of crucifixion, Golgotha, Jesus falls the 3rd time. The 9th station is adjacent to the Holy Sepulcher - the tomb of Jesus. On the way to the station the road winds around the Coptic patriarchate building, through a narrow alley. The photo below shows the east side of the Holy Sepulcher at Golgotha, which is seen in the far background.
Station 10: Jesus is stripped of His garments
At this station Jesus was stripped off his clothes, as in Mark 15,24: "And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take".
Station 10 is located at the entrance of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in the room called the Chapel of the Franks. It is seen in the photo below on the right side, with stairs that lead to the small chapel.
Station 11: Jesus is nailed to the cross
Reaching the place of crucifixion, the hill called Golgotha, Jesus is nailed to the cross. This station is located inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, just behind the wall of the 10th station. This is the Latin (Franciscan) altar on Calvary (place of the skull - Golgotha).
Stations 12: Jesus dies on the cross
Jesus is crucified and dies on the cross, ending His agony. The location of this station, 12, is a Greek Orthodox crucifixion altar which is inside the Church of Holy Sepulcher. A silver disk with a central hole, underneath the altar, marks the spot where the Cross stood, and pilgrims kneel and kiss the spot, as seen below. The silver icons of Virgin Mary and St John are on Jesus side.
Station 13: Jesus is taken down from the cross
This station is also located inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. According to tradition, the body of Jesus was laid on this stone after removed from the cross. As per John 19: 40: "Then took them the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury".
In the photo below - the stone of anointing (unction) greets the visitors, who kneel, pray and kiss the stone. Above the stone are lamps, each donated by one of the denominations.
Station 14: Jesus is laid in the tomb
This is the final station of Via Dolorosa, located in round hall ("Rotunda"). The tomb of Jesus is located in a smaller structure in the center of the circle.
Thus ends the journey of the "way of the Grief". It ended here, but a new journey sparked from this end, starting a new faith which changed the World.

History: These underground tunnels connect the western wall prayer area to the north-west side of the temple mount, passing along the side of the temple mount and under the present day houses in the Old City. Along its path are remains from the second temple period, as well as structures from later periods.
During the second temple period - from the Hasmonean period (2nd C BC) up to the Roman destruction of Jerusalem (70AD) - the area west of the temple mount connected the temple to the the western side of Jerusalem. There were four gates located on this side - two gates at a lower level and two gates on top of bridges. A paved street passed at the foot of the temple mount, and additional structures and installations were located at that street level.
Following the Roman destruction, the debris accumulated along the western side. After two millenniums, new buildings were built on top of these old layers. However, under these structures, some cavities remained buried deep underground.
Since the 19th C, explorers examined these cavities and tunnels in the search for the second temple remains. Explorers, such as Warren and Wilson, did manage to unearth sections of the tunnels, but they were limited in their research by the Ottoman rulers. Only after the six-day-war (1967), when the area returned to Israeli control, the underground area was thoroughly researched and reconstructed, and some sections are still in the process of archaeological excavations.
The tourist site was fully opened in 1996, with 500 m long tunnel along the buried north-western wall. The opening of the northern exit sparked deadly Arab riots in the old city for several days.
